2010 National Games

Special Olympics Kentucky is proud to announce the team that will represent the State as Team Kentucky at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games. The team includes 40 athletes, one unified partner and 18 coaches. Kentucky athletes will be competing in seven sports at the Games — Aquatics (swimming), Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bowling, Golf, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Softball.  Team Kentucky athletes hail from throughout the state and the team comprises a solid mix of athletes with experience at this level as well as athletes who have never been to competition above a state-level event.

Mary Fehrenbach will serve as Gymnastics Coach for Team Kentucky for the second consecutive Special Olympics USA National Games. Feherenbach’s athletes won nine Gold Medals among their 17 total medals at the 2006 Games in Ames, Iowa. Having coached in both Virginia and Kentucky, she has been a Special Olympics coach for 17 years. In addition to the 2006 National Games, Fehrenbach is a veteran of the 1999, 2003 and 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, where she also served as a Gymnastics coach. In addition to Gymnastics, Fehrenbach coaches two Special Olympics Cheerleading squads. Her work with the Kentucky Elite Showcats in Lexington has helped pave the way special needs cheerleading throughout the United States. This year she also started the Kentucky Alley Cats, a squad for Special Olympics athletes not ready to compete at the elite cheerleading level.

Kelli Davis, of Lexington will compete in Rhythmic Gymnastics. This will be the first time that Davis has competed above the State level. She has been a Special Olympics athlete for 37 years and has been competing in gymnastics for five. She is a member of the Kentucky Elite Showcats gymnastics and cheerleading teams. She has also competed in track and field and softball.
